The economic prosperity of the “Thirty Glorious Years”, the 1973 oil crisis and the Gulf War in 1991 all made a huge impact on migration around the Mediterranean rim. Illegal immigration into Europe increased during the 1990s and 2000s. Mechanisms to control migration that are currently in place are proving to be totally incompatible with the post-revolution Arab world. Europe is now facing a three-tier economic, refugee, and asylum crisis.
