Beyond petro-militarism

Angola’s post-conflict external relations strategy

Pages 102 à 121

English

Angola’s repositioning on the regional and international stage owes much to its oil wealth and military capacity, like Nigeria’s former dictatorships. Seeking political leadership status, like that of South Africa, Angola’s leaders have recognized their limitations and focused upon the Gulf of Guinea and Central Africa. An ambitious foreign policy of economic “diversification” aims at bringing investments into Angola and investing Angolan capital in foreign companies present in Angola. Angola’s economic diplomacy, rather than its military prowess, is extending Luanda’s identity and influence.
