Our capacity to critique is in crisis because we lack the criteria that would be adequate to our cultural situation. The etymology of this series of terms refers back to the Greek verb krinein, which means “to divide in order to judge”. This is a destructive gesture which breaks down a unit in order to see its components. That’s why the same root also generated the word “crime”.
