This paper addresses the menopause as a category and as an experience. It analyzes the social relations of gender at play in the medicalization of the menopause. The construction of the menopause in medical discourse, as well as its cultural impact, is marked by a homogenization and a pathologization of women’s experiences. What is more, women’s experiences are formed by a gendered learning process in interaction with doctors. However, women’s experiences of the menopause call for a reconsideration of these categorizations and orders.
