This article proposes a sociology of the intellectual production devoted to the issue of “troubled neighbourhoods” between 1985 and 1995. In particular, it examines the invention, by sociologists close to Alain Touraine, of a grid for analysing the situation in the “suburbs” and reveals the role of the revue Esprit in the shaping, disseminating and reappropriating of this grid by the project leaders of the Ministry of the City.
