From 2019 to 2021, the Independent Commission on Sexual Abuse in the Catholic Church (Ciase), chaired by Jean-Marc Sauvé, heard from numerous victims whose lives had been severely and permanently damaged by the sexual violence they suffered. Its members are experts, doctors, psychiatrists, magistrates, lawyers, sociologists, and theologians, most of them professionals in their field. Nevertheless, regularly engaging in such an experience of listening to trauma, of being exposed even indirectly to the misfortune of some and the malice of others, can take its toll. Two years after the submission of the report, we wanted to interview volunteer members of this commission—as well as Véronique Margron—about their experience.
