Rap songs’ topics are frequently subject to controversy in public opinion. Rap artists, who have been key players in the contemporary counterculture since the mid 80’s, are usually poorly thought of due to their relationship with money, lust, violence and women. Claiming to be subversive and rebels, they build an underground culture which collides with the dominant one, reversing its norms and values. Nevertheless, some artists choose to leverage their art in order to reveal supposed deceptions and lies hidden behind the accepted official truth. Rockin’ Squat, for instance, is such a player of the contemporary counterculture rejecting the dominant thoughts and condemning the establishment based on “esoteric” theories supported by conspiracy theorists. Leading the French “conscious” or “political” rap activists, Rockin’ Squat has become one of the leaders of conspiracy theorists movement turning it into a phenomenon which is part of the counter-culture.
