Which place may be given to bilingualism and plurilinguism in the prevention and care of young children raised in contact with several languages? May the recognition, the evaluation and the elaboration of the linguistic context be beneficial for these children? And may these aspects act as a therapeutic lever for clinicians involved with treatment of early development disorders? In the present paper, the authors discuss these issues and present a research and therapeutic program that has been implemented in a parent-infant mental health unit, which includes the support of mother-infant verbal communication and the valorization of the mother tongue. The authors also discuss some clinical vignettes that illustrate the positive therapeutic impact of these measures on early interaction and infant development.
