Jean-Louis Roch is honorary lecturer in medieval history at the University of Rouen. His initial research focused on the vocabulary of poverty, under the direction of Michel Mollat: les noms des mendiants (caimand, belître, maraud), "Le jeu de l'aumône au Moyen Âge" (AESC, 1989).
