A historian of architecture and cities, he is Director of Studies at the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin, having previously worked as a journalist, academic (in Rennes and Strasbourg) and then Director of Research at the CNRS. He is the author of some fifteen books and numerous articles on nineteenth- and twentieth-century architecture and heritage.
