The Second World War and the monarchy in Greece: an under-illuminated page of a contested institution
The text focuses on George II, King of the Hellenes, and his role during the Second World War. A thorough analysis is provided on his acts from 1935 to 1941, which very much determined the way he was regarded during the Second World War. The text deals afterwards with the King’s departure from Nazi-occupied Greece, his years in exile, the strong British (and American) support towards his side, his unwillingness to accept a referendum over the (much-debated) future of the royal institution prior to his own return to Greece, as well as the turbulent developments of the early after-war period in the country, before his return to the throne in 1946. The final part of the text refers to the definitive end of kingdom in Greece as sealed by the referendum of 1974.
