To what extent may Patristic Christology have fueled fundamental hostility between Christians and Jews? After outlining some of the developments characterizing contemporary research on the subject, the article highlights the main subjects of Christological controversies in the context of opposition to Judaism. Although some works indubitably contain anti-Jewish passages (such as that of the replacement of Israel by the Church), observating this “anti-Judaism” must not hinder us from seeing what was originally at issue in the debates between Christians and Jews, that is, an existential decision about the very identity of Jesus. The article thus invites us to look again at Saint Justin’s Dialogue with the Jew Trypho, paying special attention to the form of this work and its narrative prologue.
