Des magistrats, experts et travailleurs sociaux expliquent le rejet d’un parent par un enfant en s’appuyant sur une notion infondée scientifiquement : l’aliénation parentale. À partir d’entretiens avec des mères séparées en France, nous découvrons qu’elle est mentionnée dans un contexte de violences conjugales. Son usage s’inscrit dans les tactiques des hommes violents pour maintenir le contrôle coercitif après la séparation. Interpréter les situations à partir de cette notion favorise non seulement l’occultation des violences, mais compromet également les droits et la sécurité des victimes.

“Alienating” mothers or violent fathers?
Judges, experts, and social workers explain the rejection of a parent by a child by relying on a scientifically unfounded notion: parental alienation. Based on interviews with separated mothers in France, we discover that it is mentioned in a context of domestic violence. It is used as part of the tactics employed by violent men to maintain coercive control after separation. Interpreting situations in this way not only obscures the violence, but it also compromises the rights and safety of victims.
